Here is one of my all-time favorite New Yorker cartoons by Robert J. Day.
Talk about good writing. A classic twist ending that gets me every time. It appears to be drawn in pencil with gray wash and therefore has a free flowing line that looks unforced.
The drawing is dated, but classic, partially because of the clothes and furniture. I mean come on, who has books anymore (yuk yuk)? Notice that nothing in this cartoon is left to chance, and everything has a reason.
The model ship on the bookcase hints that the man was a former explorer/world traveler, and the bust, furniture and books suggest that that this balding, upper middle-aged gent has settled down and relegated himself to recounting the conquests of his youth.
As for the gag itself, who knows if it was the brainchild of Robert J. Day or not, since gagwriting as a profession was common in those days and very often artist and ideaman were 2 separate people.
Regardless, they just don't get any better than this.
Enjoy!
